Wednesday 22nd April started with activities in school. First we were introduced to the topic of energy production, traditional and alternative energy sources, their pluses and minuses. Then came the practical part. We saw how the light from a lamp activated a solar panel, how common fans could make miniature turbine work. We were surprised to find out that the effectiveness of the electricity production depends more on the constancy rather than on its strength.
Some students generated electricity in different ways, such as for example riding a bike to make apple juice. Starting the computer with the power of your legs appeared the hardest. We all realized how much energy is needed to make the digital equipment work. We found out that entertainment alone accounts for 10 percent of total world energy consumption and on our own experience we were able to realise how much effort it requires to power a single device. It was an eye opening and very educational experience. Thanks to the clarity of explanation and visual demonstrations, even those who were not very knowledgeable about the laws of physics, could understand its concepts with ease.
The demonstrations were followed by a practical part. Students were supposed to create a sun dial, start a mobile phone using solar panels and make a wind mill model using a 3d printer. The successes of all groups were sealed with souvenir photos.
After the dynamic morning we changed the pace strolling along the streets of Luhačovice, admiring 19th and 20th century resort buildings, tasting mineral water from different springs and learning about the resort during a guided tour.
Thanx to the Chechs for another lovely day!
